Mom, she’s who brought you end to this world. She changed your diapers, took you for your first hair cut, was there for every graduation day and does so much more for you. She totally deserves a day; but do you know how Mother’s Day came to be?
Where it all began..
To keep it brief, we’ll just talk about modern American Mother’s day, because appreciating mothers has gone throughout time. The first official Mother’s Day was in West Virginia in 1908 by Anna Jarvis as a way to honor the sacrifices mothers made for their children. By 1912, many states, had adopted Mother’s Day as an annual holiday, but in was in 1914 that President Woodrow Wilson officially established the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.
Mother’s Day is celebrated all around the world. For example, in Thailand it’s celebrated in August on the birthday of their queen, Sirikit. In Ethiopia, families gather together each fall to sing songs and enjoy a large feast as part of Antrosht, a celebration honoring motherhood. Here in the U.S., traditions vary by family. Cards, gifts, making dinner -these are just a few examples of how families say ‘thank you’ to mom.
