Father’s Day is coming around the corner and what better place to have fun with dear old dad than Charleston Fun Park? We’ve got something for everyone of all ages and interest. We’ve got tons to do with dad, but do you know how there came to be a day dedicated to fathers all around?
A Brief History Lesson
The first sponsored father’s day was all the way back in 1908 by a church in West Virginia to honor the 362 men who passed in a coal mine explosion. Fast forward to 1924 when President Calvin Coolidge urged state governments to observe Father’s day, but unfortunately there weren’t many men backing the idea. According to one historian, they “scoffed at the holiday’s sentimental attempts to domesticate manliness with flowers and gift-giving.” So they weren’t ready for the awesomeness of Father’s Day, it’s OK, Richard Nixon was. In 1972 during a re-election campaign Nixon proclaimed Father’s Day a federal holiday.
It’s estimated that Americans spend over $1 billion on gifts for Father’s Day each year. How crazy is that? We’re the first ones to admit dad is awesome, but we ask you this- what’s more important, gifts or memories?
